Publication & Acknowledgment Policies
The COBRE CMADP is funded by an Institutional Development Award (IDeA) from the NIH's National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS). Because of this, all publications describing research that made use of COBRE CMADP funding and/or its Core Lab facilities should include an acknowledgment to the following effect:
- For publications acknowledging use of COBRE CMADP grant funding and/or Core Lab facilities prior to 7/1/22: Research reported in this publication was supported by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences of the National Institutes of Health under Award Number P20 GM103638.
- For publications acknowledging use of COBRE CMADP grant funding and/or Core Lab facilities after 7/1/22: Research reported in this publication was supported by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences of the National Institutes of Health under Award Number P30 GM145499.
Funding agencies including NIGMS require and monitor these acknowledgments, and the NIH measures the success of the CMADP in part by them. Thank you for remembering to cite us in your publications!
NOTE: In addition, publications that make use of instruments funded by federal agencies must cite the source of support throughout the lifetime of the instrument. The NIH now requires reporting of these publications on new applications for shared instruments, and failure to show extensive productivity from prior grants quite literally jeopardizes future grants. To this end, researchers are asked to send copies of all publications that were supported by CMADP Core Lab facilities to the respective CMADP Core Lab Directors.
CMADP Core Lab Directors and staff members often make significant intellectual or otherwise enabling contributions to the success of a research project, and recognition of these contributions is important. In such cases it is expected that such individual(s) will be included as co-author(s) of all publications arising from or making use of the results obtained by a CMADP Core Laboratory.
Significant intellectual input could take a variety of forms and would include any or all of the following:
- Experimental design such as optimization or adaptation of data collection schemes;
- Interpretation or analysis of results; or
- Writing or editing significant portions of the manuscript.
In general, it is preferable to discuss the potential for this at the outset of the project, especially when the project involves developmental work rather than repetition of an established procedure. Research advisors should contact the respective CMADP Core Lab Director if there is a question about this policy, or about a CMADP Core Lab staff member’s contribution to a project.
Manuscripts that contain routine data from a CMADP Core Lab or describe tasks requiring minimal Core Lab staff assistance may include an acknowledgement of the facility or staff member(s) at the lead author’s discretion. In the aggregate, such acknowledgments serve to document the value of Core Laboratories to the University community.
Service Lab Fees. Please note that service fees are charged to maintain and improve each of the Core Lab facilities. These service fees are not a substitute for appropriate recognition of the contributions of Core Lab personnel through co-authorship of publications.
